While I became a Beachbody Coach in May of 2008, I like to say that I truly started becoming a Coach in December of 2009. My coaching story starts at a meeting of about 400 people in Newport Beach, California. My mom, who was working for Chalene Johnson at the time, invited me because in her words, “Chalene said this is going to be amazing.” I asked her what it was, she had no clue. All I could determine was that it was about a company called “Beachbody” and that they were the makers of P90X. Now, I had heard of P90X, but had never tried it; I had only seen the informercials, like thousands upon thousands of others. But, May in Newport Beach, California is way better than May in Phoenix, Arizona, so I figured what the heck. It gets kind of hot in Phoenix in the summer. So, off I went.

The meeting was great. People from corporate Beachbody spoke. Chalene spoke. Some other people I didn’t know spoke. A few more people spoke. When they finally arrived at the business portion of the presentation, I snapped to and listened intently. After approximately 0.84 seconds, I concluded I had wasted my time. Network marketing? Are you KIDDING??? I am a lawyer. I went to school for nearly a decade to massage intelligence into and out of my cerebral cortex. You want me to sell water filters like a used-car salesman? Uh, no thanks. Towards the end of the presentation, when everyone but myself and a few other people (who were like me and clearly “too good” for this) were rushing to enroll, I just stood at the back of the room snickering. Fools, I thought. You will regret this waste of money. Network marketing companies are all a scam. It’s just a pyramid scheme used to dupe those of lower mental capacities. I am way too smart for that.

All was not lost though. My wonderful mom, in spite of my reservations, signed up, became a Coach, and bought the most expensive starter kit, which conveniently enough, contained P90X. Later that day, I read the legal documents, harshly critiquing them because, you know, as a lawyer, I know everything.

But, packing to fly home that night, I “accidentally” purloined her P90X. While I knew I was better than all network marketers, I was rather curious about P90X. I wasn’t practicing law at the time as, about a year prior, I had quit to stay home with my son (and I also had a daughter on the way too), so maybe P90X would be good for me while I was at home being a house-husband.

After about 30 days of P90X, I maybe wasn’t ready to declare to the world that I was now a network marketer, but I did love P90X and was more than willing to accept the commissions from my friends’ purchases. Why should that $30 go to someone else? After all, it only costs $40 to enroll as a Coach. I knew I could quit at any time and for any reason and, after selling as many copies of P90X as I could, I fully intend to quit. I was still better than those silly people from that meeting, wasn’t I?

Given that I had a one year old son and a brand new daughter on the way, I didn’t have much time to devote to Coaching. I actually really enjoyed it, but maybe an hour a day at most was all I could afford. I have to admit that my enjoyment and growing passion for coaching and helping others was unexpected. When I enrolled, I solely focused on the money. How many copies of P90X would I have to sell to make $XXX. That was my focus and nothing more.

As time passed though, my customer base grew. Not only did I have my own customers, but through Beachbody’s “Customer Lead Program”, I received more and more new customers each week. I began to look forward to reaching out to those random people, getting to know them a little, and seeing if I could help them. What were their goals? What was their current level of fitness and where did they want to take it? The more time that passed, the more my little commission checks grew until they were no longer so little. After just under two years, I realized that this little “thing” I did from home might save me from having to return to the penal institution that is practicing law. I really didn’t want to go back to being chained to a desk for 9-10 hours a day, 365 day a year. That reality became less and less appealing as my Coaching business became more and more lucrative.

Fast forwarding to now, nearly three years into Coaching, and I can unequivocally say that I am never going back to lawyer-land. Goodbye forever! I even sold all my suits. Of course, thanks to P90X, Insanity, and other programs, they fit me like tents anyway!

I can honestly say that I know what it takes to be a successful Coach. I feel like I have the greatest job on the planet. I get to be with my wonderful two kids and wife everyday. I get to help people change their lives, whether through fitness or finance or both. I love what I do and am so thankful that my hubris gave way to reason, thanks to P90X. Instead of working a job I despised, I have my own business, in an industry I truly love, and get to help thousands of people improve their lives, make excellent money, and still be a dad/husband before any other thing. Without sounding corny, I really feel like it is a dream come true.
